文昌 (wen2 chang1) day represents literacy, knowledge and authority. Traditionally, governors and officials are selected by knowledge and virtue. This is the day when people who are studying or having examinations pray to the god/star of literacy and hope to be blessed.
Most people visit local 孔庙 (kong3 miao4), place their offerings and pray. It is traditional to use chives, spring onions, celery to symbolise knowledge and then use these ingredients to cook slices of fish, prawns and noodles for lunch. If you do not wish to go that far, consumption of the noodles with ingredients would be close enough to show your respects to the god of literacy.
